How do I reserve Vimeo in R2?

How does Vimeo charge us?

Our Vimeo account has the ability to handle up to a finite number of simultaneous streams. We don't pay anything to have more stream keys or "events" created and available, but we do pay to stream to more channels at the same time. This means we need to keep track of how many streams are being used when. Fortunately, R2 is made for doing just that... more or less.

Everything in R2 is either a Rental Item or a Miscellaneous Charge. Vimeo licenses don't fit well into either of these categories.

  • Rental items have finite available quantity (👍), but they are also tied to sites and need to be available at a given site in order for that site to reserve them (👎).
  • Miscellaneous charges can be used by any site at any time without requiring transfers (👍), but they have no ability to enforce any quantity limitations (👎).

A Vimeo license exists both as a Rental Item and as a Miscellaneous Charge. The rental items all have MAIN as their owner site. Since we only own a finite number of Vimeo licenses companywide, they must be tracked. We have to know how many are being used when, and we have to know if we're about to overuse what we own.

Orders from site MAIN

This is the most straightforward case: simply reserve the appropriate quantity of the rental item Vimeo Webcasting License on your order. The Miscellaneous Item Vimeo License doesn't matter to you.

Orders from other sites

The Miscellaneous Item Vimeo License exists to make things easier for other sites. Rather than dealing with all of the operational overhead that comes with transfers, you can use the Miscellaneous Charge as a stand-in for the Rental Item on your order for the purpose of charging the client.

However, since Miscellaneous Items don't track anything, you also need to create a no-charge order out of site MAIN and reserve the same quantity of Rental Item Vimeo Webcasting License there. If those show up as Not Available, Event IT needs to know about it.
