Set-up of Primary, Back-up and Iso Recording Devices

• Feed audio to all devices, including iso feeds of cameras and graphics.  This is critical when synchronizing the various feeds during post-production.

-       Back up recording devices should receive audio and video feeds independently from the primary recording device.  Do not daisy chain recording devices.

Testing Recording Devices

-       Conduct a test recording on each device.  Playback each test recording on a different device, such as a laptop, and ensure the appropriate audio and video signal is routed to each device.  Audio should sound clean (no hiss, buzz, or other noise) and levels set correctly. 

·         A good rule of thumb regarding setting proper audio levels is to average    -18 db with the peaks hitting at -6 db. Simply stated, keep the meters in the yellow. If the meters are consistently in the green, the levels are too low.  If the meters are in the red, the levels are too hot and clipping will occur.

-       Be sure to use headphones when checking test recordings.  Do not assume the audio quality is satisfactory just because the meters are moving on the recording device.

-       When an event takes place over multiple days, test recordings should be conducted prior to the start of the event each day.

Monitoring Recording Devices

-       All recording devices should be monitored throughout the event using headphones.

-       Adjust audio levels as necessary to maintain a quality recording.

Post Event Instructions

-       Upon completion of the event, stop each device and be sure that the finalization process is complete before ejecting drives, turning off devices or disconnecting the unit from power.  Doing so will corrupt the recording.

-       Label the recording device with the requested information on the orange label/sheet provided in the case and adhere it to the outside of the case or place it inside the case. 

·         All footage is archived for 1 year so proper labelling is necessary to assure footage can be easily located if requested by our clients. 

·         If the label is not provided, use white tape and include the event name, date of recording and feed (program, iso cam 1, graphics, etc.).

-       Repackage all devices and drives in their respective cases for shipping.

-       If a device is not functioning properly, please place a Death X on the case.  Notate the issue and fill out an MFDX form (see video on Death X instruction on Backstage).
