Understanding the Binary DMX Patch
Understanding the Binary DMX Patch
Each Dip Switch Number is assigned a DMX Channel value through binary code. Below is a table to easily portray the relationship between each Dip Switch Number and its DMX Channel value.
If you’re wondering what happened to Dip Switch Number 10, don’t worry. Dip Switch 10 is used primarily for testing, and does not have a value. With DMX Addressing, you will only use numbers 1-9.
Setting your DMX Address
When you set the starting DMX address of a given lighting controller, you are essentially setting the starting point of the DMX signal for the first fader. Within a single DMX Universe, you have a total of 512 Channels. If the first address you need is “Address 001," be sure to switch your first dip switch "1" to the on position.
Dip Switch Calculators
Various DMX Dip Switch calculators are available across the internet. For example, Chauvet has one through the link below. Be aware that their calculator's "ON" position is down, the opposite position of the Elation SDC12.

Another option is to use an app. Apple and Android have multiple options, but one free app is "DMX Dip."
